• Flex SDK missing fundamental things

  All of a sudden Flash Builder 4 is missing all kinds of fundamental things and is generating incorrect errors. I've had the same issue yesterday, where I fixed it by downloading a new Flex SDK and importing that into FB. I did this again, but this time it fixed nothing. I don't think it's something I did, like removing critical references from the build path. The errors also appeared on projects I was not working on at the time. It occurs for ActionScript, Flex and Flex Library projects alike. Update 3: Well, i've singled the problem down to a single piece of code, though a very simple one. I can make a new workspace in FB and things work ok, then screw the workspace up forever by adding this code to a project. All projects will have errors and closing or even removing the faulty project does not change this. Making another new workspace (without the faulty code) makes my projects compile again. It appears to be an SDK problem, not Flash Builder. • Managing highly repetitive code and documentation in Java

  Highly repetitive code is generally a bad thing, and there are design patterns that can help minimize this. However, sometimes it's simply inevitable due to the constraints of the language itself. Take the following example from java.util.Arrays: /** * Assigns the specified long value to each element of the specified * range of the specified array of longs. (If <tt>fromIndex==toIndex</tt>, the * range to be filled is empty.) * * @param a the array to be filled * @param fromIndex the index of the first element (inclusive) to be * filled with the specified value * @param toIndex the index of the last element (exclusive) to be * filled with the specified value * @param val the value to be stored in all elements of the array * @throws IllegalArgumentException if <tt>fromIndex &gt; toIndex</tt> * @throws ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException if <tt>fromIndex &lt; 0</tt> or * <tt>toIndex &gt; a.length</tt> */ public static void fill(long[] a, int fromIndex, int toIndex, long val) { rangeCheck(a.length, fromIndex, toIndex); for (int i=fromIndex; i<toIndex; i++) a[i] = val; } The above snippet appears in the source code 8 times, with very little variation in the documentation/method signature but exactly the same method body, one for each of the root array types int[], short[], char[], byte[], boolean[], double[], float[], and Object[]. I believe that unless one resorts to reflection (which is an entirely different subject in itself), this repetition is inevitable. I understand that as a utility class, such high concentration of repetitive Java code is highly atypical, but even with the best practice, repetition does happen! Refactoring doesn't always work because it's not always possible (the obvious case is when the repetition is in the documentation). Obviously maintaining this source code is a nightmare. A slight typo in the documentation, or a minor bug in the implementation, is multiplied by however many repetitions was made. In fact, the best example happens to involve this exact class: Google Research Blog - Extra, Extra - Read All About It: Nearly All Binary Searches and Mergesorts are Broken (by Joshua Bloch, Software Engineer) The bug is a surprisingly subtle one, occurring in what many thought to be just a simple and straightforward algorithm. // int mid =(low + high) / 2; // the bug int mid = (low + high) >>> 1; // the fix The above line appears 11 times in the source code! So my questions are: How are these kinds of repetitive Java code/documentation handled in practice? How are they developed, maintained, and tested? Do you start with "the original", and make it as mature as possible, and then copy and paste as necessary and hope you didn't make a mistake? And if you did make a mistake in the original, then just fix it everywhere, unless you're comfortable with deleting the copies and repeating the whole replication process? And you apply this same process for the testing code as well? Would Java benefit from some sort of limited-use source code preprocessing for this kind of thing? Perhaps Sun has their own preprocessor to help write, maintain, document and test these kind of repetitive library code? A comment requested another example, so I pulled this one from Google Collections: com.google.common.base.Predicates lines 276-310 (AndPredicate) vs lines 312-346 (OrPredicate). • eXML-PARSER output contains unwanted hash references

  So I wrote a parser routine to take one xml file and reparse into another one. This code I later modified to split a large xml file into many small xml files. I am having a problem with an output. • How do I solve an unresolved external when using C++ Builder packages?

  I'm experimenting with reconfiguring my application to make heaving use of packages. Both I and another developer running a similar experiment are running into a bit of trouble when linking using several different packages. We're probably both doing something wrong, but goodness knows what :) The situation is this: The first package, PackageA.bpl, contains C++ class FooA. The class is declared with the PACKAGE directive. The second package, PackageB.bpl, contains a class inheriting from FooA, called FooB. It includes FooB.h, and the package is built using runtime packages, and links to PackageA by adding a reference to PackageA.bpi. It seems "safer" using VCL-style classes when trying to solve problems with a very Delphi-ish thing like this anyway. Changing this only changes the order of unresolved externals to first not find Method1 and Method2, then others.) Is linking to the first package by adding a reference to its BPI correct - is that how you're supposed to do it? I could use a LIB but it seems to make the second package much larger, and I suspect it's statically linking in the contents of the first. Can we use the PACKAGE directive only on TObject-derived classes? There is no compiler warning using it on standard C++ classes. Is splitting code into packages the best way to achieve the goal of isolating code and communicating through defined layers / interfaces? I've been investigating this path because it seems to be the C++Builder / Delphi Way, and if it worked it looks attractive. But are there better alternatives? I'm very new to using packages and have only known about them through using components before. Any general words of advice would be great! We're using C++Builder 2010.   I'm getting NullReferenceExeceptions at seemly random times in my application and can't track down what could be causing the error. I'll do my best to describe the scenario and setup. Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated! C# .net 3.5 Forms Application, but I use the WebFormRouting library built by Phil Haack (http://haacked.com/archive/2008/03/11/using-routing-with-webforms.aspx) to leverage the Routing libraries of .net (usually used in conjunction with MVC) - intead of using url rewriting for my urls. My database has 60 tables. All Normalized. It's just a massive application. (SQL server 2008) All queries are built with Linq to SQL in code (no SP's). Each time a new instance of my data context is created. I use only one data context with all relationships defined in 4 relationship diagrams in SQL Server. the data context gets created a lot. I let the closing of the data context be handled automatically. I've heard arguments both sides about whether you should leave to be closed automatically or do it yourself. In this case I do it myself. It doesnt seem to matter if I'm creating a lot of instances of the data context or just one. • Google Maps: remember id of marker with open info window

  I have a Google map that is showing a number of markers. It is not ideal, because often the boundaries are redrawn when the user clicks on a marker and the map moves to display the info window - so the info window appears and then disappears again :) I guess there are a couple of possible ways: remember which marker has an open info window, and open it again when the markers are redrawn don't actually re-add the marker with an open info window, just leave it there However, both require the marker with an open window to have some kind of ID number, and I don't know that this is actually the case in the Google Maps API. • Strange intermittent SQL connection error, fixes on reboot, comes back after 3-5 days (ASP.NET)

  For some reason every 3-5 days our web app loses the ability to open a connection to the db with the following error, the strange thing is that all we have to do is reboot the container (it is a VPS) and it is restored to normal functionality. Then a few days later or so it happens again. Has anyone ever had such a problem? I have noticed a lot of ANONYMOUS LOGONs in the security log in the middle of the night from our AD server which is strange, and also some from an IP in Amsterdam. I am not sure how to tell what exactly they mean or if it is related or not. Server Error in '/ntsb' Application. • Allocation algorithm help, using Python.

  Hi there, I've been working on this general allocation algorithm for students. The pseudocode for it (a Python implementation) is: for a student in a dictionary of students: for student's preference in a set of preferences (ordered from 1 to 10): let temp_project be the first preferred project check if temp_project is available if so, allocate it to them and make the project UNavailable to others Quite simply this will try to allocate projects by starting from their most preferred. The way it works, out of a set of say 100 projects, you list 10 you would want to do. So the 10th project wouldn't be the "least preferred overall" but rather the least preferred in their chosen set, which isn't so bad. Obviously if it can't allocate a project, a student just reverts to the base case which is an allocation of None, with a rank of 11. What I'm doing is calculating the allocation "quality" based on a weighted sum of the ranks. So the lower the numbers (i.e. more highly preferred projects), the better the allocation quality (i.e. more students have highly preferred projects). That's basically what I've currently got. Simple and it works. Now I'm working on this algorithm that tries to minimise the allocation weight locally (this pseudocode is a bit messy, sorry). The only reason this will probably work is because my "search space" as it is, isn't particularly large (just a very general, anecdotal observation, mind you). Since the project is only specific to my Department, we have their own limits imposed. So the number of students can't exceed 100 and the number of preferences won't exceed 10. for student in a dictionary/list/whatever of students: where i = 0 take the (i)st student, (i+1)nd student for their ranks: allocate the projects and set local_weighting to be sum(student_i.alloc_proj_rank, student_i+1.alloc_proj_rank) these are the cases: if local_weighting is 2 (i.e. both ranks are 1): then i += 1 and and continue above if local weighting is = N>2 (i.e. one or more ranks are greater than 1): let temp_local_weighting be N: pick student with lowest rank and then move him to his next rank and pick the other student and reallocate his project after this if temp_local_weighting is < N: then allocate those projects to the students move student with lowest rank to the next rank and reallocate other if temp_local_weighting < previous_temp_allocation: let these be the new allocated projects try moving for the lowest rank and reallocate other else: if this weighting => previous_weighting let these be the allocated projects i += 1 and move on for the rest of the students So, questions: This is sort of a modification of simulated annealing, but any sort of comments on this would be appreciated. How would I keep track of which student is (i) and which student is (i+1) If my overall list of students is 100, then the thing would mess up on (i+1) = 101 since there is none. How can I circumvent that? Any immediate flaws that can be spotted?   I've downloaded the employees database and executed some queries for benchmarking purposes. Then I noticed that one query didn't use a covering index, although there was a corresponding index that I created earlier. Only when I added a FORCE INDEX clause to the query, it used a covering index. I've uploaded two files, one is the executed SQL queries and the other is the results. Can you tell why the query uses a covering-index only when a FORCE INDEX clause is added? The EXPLAIN shows that in both cases, the index dept_no_from_date_idx is being used anyway.   Hello, so far I made a component in C# .NET 4 and use System.EnterpriseServices to make it COM visible. I want to develop business methods in C#, but I still need to access them from classic ASP (vbscript). So far so good, everything works fine (exept function overloading :)). VarType is 13 object for the dictionary e.g. but this dict seems to be different then the Scripting.Dictionary. I checked codeproject.com and stackoverflow all day and didn't find any hints exept some thread on stackoverflow where someone mentioned there is a need to created a IDispatch interface. • How to create a Facebook-App style notifications custom table?

  I want to add a custom table to my iPhone app, that should look and work like the one used in the facebook app showing the notifications. It should contain rows with links in it. The text should be black, while the tap-able parts should appear blue. As a already figured out, labels only have one font, color and so on and you can't mix styles within it, I would have to use different components. The tab-able text parts maybe UIButtons with custom style without any border. I tried different approches to build the custom cell. I used Interface Builder, to layout components, but since the different parts have variable lengths they overlaid each other. I also tried to add instances of UIButton and UILabel as a subview to the cell's contentView as descibed in Apple's tutorial. The problem with this is that: The position and size of the components is fix and set when they get created using "initWithFrame:...". • C program runs in Cygwin but not Linux (Malloc)

  I have a heap allocation error that I cant spot in my code that is picked up on vanguard/gdb on Linux but runs perfectly on a Windows cygwin environment. I understand that Linux could be tighter with its heap allocation than Windows but I would really like to have a response that discovers the issue/possible fix. I'm also aware that I shouldn't typecast malloc in C but it's a force of habit and doesn't change my problem from happening. • Smart auto detect and replace URLs with anchor tags

  I've written a regular expression that automatically detects URLs in free text that users enter. This is not such a simple task as it may seem at first. Jeff Atwood writes about it in his post. His regular expression works, but needs extra code after detection is done. I've managed to write a regular expression that does everything in a single go. This is how it looks like (I've broken it down into separate lines to make it more understandable what it does): 1 (?<outer>\()? 2 (?<scheme>http(?<secure>s)?://)? 3 (?<url> 4 (?(scheme) 5 (?:www\.)? 6 | 7 www\. 8 ) 9 [a-z0-9] 10 (?(outer) 11 [-a-z0-9/+&@#/%?=~_()|!:,.;cšžcd]+(?=\)) 12 | 13 [-a-z0-9/+&@#/%?=~_()|!:,.;cšžcd]+ 14 ) 15 ) 16 (?<ending>(?(outer)\))) As you may see, I'm using named capture groups (used later in Regex.Replace()) and I've also included some local characters (cšžcd), that allow our localised URL to be parsed as well. You can easily omit them if you'd like. Anyway. Here's what it does (referring to line numbers): 1 - detects if URL starts with open braces (is contained inside braces) and stores it in "outer" named capture group 2 - checks if it starts with URL scheme also detecting whether scheme is SSL or not 3 - starts parsing URL itself (will store it in "url" named capture group) 4-8 - if statement that says: if "sheme" was present then www. part is optional, otherwise mandatory for a string to be a link (so this regular expression detects all strings that start with either http or www) 9 - first character after http:// or www. should be either a letter or a number (this can be extended if you would like to cover even more links, but I've decided to omit other characters because I can't remember a link that would start with some other character 10-14 - if statement that says: if "outer" (braces) was present capture everything up to the last closing braces otherwise capture all 15 - closes the named capture group for URL 16 - if open braces was present, capture closing braces as well and store it in "ending" named capture group First and last line used to have \s* in them as well, so user could also write open braces and put a space inside before pasting link. Anyway. Question I would like for my links to be replaced with shortenings as well. So when user copies a very long links (for instance if they would copy a link from google maps that usually generates long links I would like to shorten the visible part of the anchor tag. Link would work, but visible part of an anchor tag would be shortened to some number of characters. Does the replace string support notations like that so I can stil use a singe Regex.Replace() call?

For example, I can use {if}, {foreach}, or {assign} tags without any problems. But whenever I try to use {html_select_date}, {html_image}, or {html_table}, I get the errors. In case this matters, the programmer who is designing the plugin copied the openXWorkflow plugin and made some changes. I noticed that the openXWorkflow plugin has a file (openx/plugins_repo/openXWorkflow/www/admin/plugins/openXWorkflow/library/OX/UI/Smarty/SmartyCompilerWithViewHelper.php) with a class that overrides the default Smarty compiler, supposedly with the ability to compile shorthands for calling ZF view helpers. That file has a list of Smarty functions, but the list is incomplete. If I add the functions to the list, or simply delete the file, my template works fine, but I don't like to change library files. It may make the app hard to maintain, and I don't know if it will mess up something else. The file has the comment "There is no easy access to the list of Smarty's built-in functions so we need to list them here. HTML-specific functions are not included as we cover HTML generation separately.", so it seems like certain Smarty functions may be disabled on purpose for some reason. Will anything bad happen if I try to use them? If, for example, I want to use the {html_select_date} tag in my template, how would I go about doing that? Keep in mind that much of this stuff is new and unfamiliar to me. This is my first time ever using OpenX or Smarty, and I only have a little bit of experience with the Zend framework. Please let me know if we are using the wrong approach.

I want to be able to change the background color of the first View based on it's position in the ListView.
